Sharkwater Trailer

Rob Stewart set out when he was 22 to make a beautiful, underwater film about sharks. It seemed like a simple enough task for the Toronto-based wildlife photographer. That is, until he hitched a ride with famed ‘eco-pirate’ and co-founder of Greenpeace, Paul Watson and all his plans went out the window. Armed with a rented High-Definition video camera, Stewart, a first-time filmmaker, embarked on a journey to document his favourite animal, the much maligned and misunderstood oceanic predator, the shark.

Sharkwater hit screens earlier this year to much critical acclaim. What had started out as an attempt to make a simple underwater documentary turned into a life and death struggle to show the world the plight of one of its oldest animals. Even more unlikely was Stewart’s decision to turn the cameras on himself, but his inclusion in his own film makes this more than just your average nature documentary.

You want more?

obviously.ca sat down for a one-on-one with Sharkwater's director, Rob Stewart; we talked about his fascination with sharks, the making of the documentary, and the close call or three he had while filming. We also wrote an article about the documentary.
