How would you describe your ideal environment?
My ideal environment is one that follows the laws of nature. It is clean and sustainable, and provides for all of the beings and ecosystems on earth. I believe that as a global culture, we must be aware of our footprint on the earth, and understand that what we do in one region of the earth has an effect across the globe, across nations, on every continent, in the atmosphere and in every ocean, glacier and body of water.

You’re known for socially and environmentally conscious lyrics. How did that come about?
Ever since I can remember, my songs have spoken to the listener about the current state of affairs, human history, the environment and human rights. I believe that music is one of the most powerful forms of communication. It transcends the boundaries of language and culture. I come from a long line of freedom fighters - my family ran a depot on the Underground Railroad - and my history comes out in my music.

What concerns you the most about the current state of the environment?
I am concerned about the general lack of interest in protecting the environment seen in the dealings of most large corporations. It is obvious that corporations, and governments for that matter, put profits ahead of health and habitat, risking the health and survival of animals, ecosystems and people. I am saddened that the laws of our society protect corporations rather than punishing them for environmental destruction and human suffering.

What or who inspires you to make a difference?
I am inspired by both the strong established leaders and the up and coming young leaders who are willing to stand up for what they believe in. Especially those who use their minds, language, art and creative forces to fight for what they feel is right instead of violence.

What is your environmental credo?
It ain’t easy being green.

What is the one thing you wish others would do to help improve the environment?
There are some simple things everybody can do that can help: carry a reusable travel mug for coffee, buy fair trade, recycle plastic and tins, walk or take the bus instead of driving, turn the lights off when you leave the room...think about the little things you can do and watch them add up to a cleaner planet!

Any final words?
A few years back, my sister suggested a really great idea - every new year, instead of making a new year’s resolution for yourself, make one for the earth instead! Think of something new you can do on a daily basis to contribute and after a few years you’ll see that you are doing a lot! Remember that if every person does even a little bit, it will make a BIG difference over time. Nothing happens overnight, so remember everything we do today will have an effect far into the future, for generations to come.

Bio: GreenTaRA

“A soulful vixen that will blow your ears out with her voice...” – The Late Greats

Armed with a rare voice, a red Epiphone Riviera and a penchant for social awareness, GreenTaRA brings a refreshing taste of reality to modern soul music. As a soloist or front woman for her live band, this Vancouver-born Canadian of African-American/Cherokee and Scottish descent delivers jazz-laced lyrics over funk and reggae riffs as diverse as her heritage. Recently named “Best of the Fest” in music at the 2007 Austin Woman’s Film, Music & Literary Festival, GreenTaRA is making her mark as one of the Canada’s finest independent artists.

Released in October, 2007, “Global Baby” is the follow-up release to GreenTaRA’s debut album “Music For A Mixed Nation”. The new album serves a delectable menu of the soulful music and spicy lyrics for which this artist has quickly become known:

GreenTaRA has performed at the United Nations in New York, Fete de la Musique in Berlin, the Frostbite Music Festival, Baltimore Music Festival and the Vans Warped Tour, among national and international performances. She tours worldwide, having heated the stage for artists such as Michael Franti, Jully Black, Kelis, K-os, K’naan, Medusa, and De La Soul. Along with extensive touring, GreenTaRA has continued to record and produce independent albums for 10 years, establishing her own indie label Easy Bake Records, and production company GreenTaRA Music.
